Artist Statement: The mind and its memory are funny and fickle. Over time, many memories become distorted and fragments are lost. The subjects of these photographs will always have memories that some may either recall proudly, or wish to forget, for those memories are forever etched in their skin. Their memories exist physically and publicly, and declare without words that they are set apart from their peers. They have faced fear, sorrow, and pain in all its ugly forms. They have found themselves in darkness, and have sought light with a kind of bravery to which most people will never have the occasion to rise. Each of us have our own scars, though not all our scars are visible. For many they are not only past events, but enduring realities, whose scars signify their triumphs. One of the subjects of this series, Tanya, said it best: “[We] are not victims, [we] are survivors.”
